Directory Submission is a Major Disappointment to New Webmasters.
Many webmasters might disagree with me on this article but I am talking not only for one site but for more than five sites that we optimized since December, including Myseoblog.net. This is an experiment about Directory Submission and after six months the result is disappointing.
Myseoblog.net alone has been manually submitted to 1,600 active directories from December until last week with an average of 10 to 20 directories per day. Out of 1,600 submissions, around 1,410 have been accepted and the rest are considered pending or rejected. Having a percentage of 88.25% is relatively a very promising result for accepted submission. But the thing is, as of yesterday there are only 23 directory listings appear in Google for Myseoblog.net.
If you are an administrator of another site with the same result, would you feel contented? I don’t think it is acceptable. I tried checking around 50 directories who accepted Myseoblog.net today, the site is listed but it is very deep for Google to dig and to make it appear on search results pages – even using the domain as keyword in search field.
I don’t have a second thought quitting all of my directory submission activities and spending my time to other ways like creating good articles, posting in forums, and exchanging discussions with friends in Blogging Communities. It is a waste of time submitting your site to a directory that has a PR3 or below. And even the directory has a PR of 6, still it does not matter because your link will be listed 3 to 4 clicks away from main page.
Content is still the King. If you want to see your site in search engines, especially in Google and MSN Search Live, create a good content with high keyword density and the search engine will voluntarily index your page.
Most of Myseoblog.net’s backlinks are through free blog reviews, forum signatures, and blog comments. These backlinks help the site to make it more visible in search engines.
As a conclusion, many webmasters overrate Directory Submission without analyzing the negative result. Furthermore, many Link Directories are fly-by-night and come-and-go websites created by those webmasters who are just testing their design and programming skills. Vilesilencer.com is adding and removing a lot of active and inactive directories almost every week. This is a sign that Directories are not stable.

That is very disappointing to hear, Raden. I have submitted my blog to around 120 blog directories and never had check how many exactly have been resulted positively.
I stopped the submission months ago and concentrating on quality content and forum posting.
Thanks for reminding us.

It’s good to hear that you stop… Your time might be useful in doing other ways of promotion..

Directory submission is the least technique i use for building links and its quite a waste of time from the limited time i ‘ve gotten. A criteria of a good directory is that the directories should use optimized search techniques and should have classifications to suit the needs of the business.

Also the trouble is that when one does massive directory submission the anchor text of the links is always the same, and Google doesn’t like that.

I would agree that there are thousands of directories out there that are a waste of time; however, a link is a link and if you are really trying to get an advantage over your competitors, I think submitting to certain directories can still be very valuable. I don’t know what directories you were submitting to but you claim only 23 / 1500 directory links were counted by Google…I have multiple sites that I have optimized that all have between 50-200 directory links counted by Google and I have never submitted any site to more than 500-600 directories.

I agree with Raden, I have the same experiences about this thing. I am very striven for submitting my website to +200 directory within two month, but I get bad result about that. I only get backlinks ten under. I feel so depressed and spent too much time.
If you want to submit directory I think you must be submitting paid directory, it will be accepted quickly in few days.
