As if there even needs to be an article on why spam is a bad idea, but it seems that people keep thinking it is a good idea, so here I am.

Why do people spam? If you get your website address onto tons of other websites, it will increase your page rank and thus bring you more traffic. Now, as this is true for clean, professional, legitimate SEO, it is not true for spam. Spamming actually counts against you in the long run. It may benefit your site for a very short amount of time, but it is really not worth the effort (or lack thereof), for the final result.
Why SPAMming is a Bad Idea
Let’s hit a few topics as to why spam is a bad idea.

  • 1. It is extraordinarily annoying.
  • 2. It takes forever for you to sift through, if you don’t have any kind of protection against it (and even if you do).
  • 3. It clogs up bandwidth, taking away from the legitimate users and could in theory cost you more in the long run.
  • 4. When sending spam from your home you may receive a phone call from your ISP because you are using up so much bandwidth.
  • 5. When paying a company to do your dirty work, you will lose unnecessary amounts of money and for what? To be annoying to a wide variety of people.
  • 6. Spamming companies are taken offline for a reason. Once there is enough evidence against one it will disappear. Unfortunately, they have a tendency to reestablish themselves elsewhere and start up their operations again.
  • 7. As a result of number 5, your website will likely be blacklisted as a spammer.
  • 8. People will lose faith in your site. They will cease to see it as a professional place, and be very skeptical about ever returning (if they even ended up on your site in the first place).
  • 9. People are afraid of ending up with computer viruses and are therefore less likely to click on something that appears to be suspicious.
  • 10. Nobody likes spam. Just ask anyone. No one ever enjoys getting spammed.
  • 11. Did I mention it is extremely annoying?

When it comes down to it, your site loses credibility. Do you feel secure if you click on a spam link and there’s some sort of service or something for sale on the other end? Not particularly. Think about other people. Just because you spam the entire world with your website’s URL does not mean it will help you.

If you want to spread your links through the world wide web, then do it the old fashioned, hardworking way. Be a good company, promote your site and practice superb SEO. It will come in time, and when it does, it will be there for the long haul. Spam is like a get rich quick scheme, or a fast weight loss plan. Sure, it has immediate turn around, but you will get burned in the long run when you’re not doing it honestly.
