Are Social Networks Killing Websites?
Ever since the creation of Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, many internet users have been using these sites as a way of gaining information from a specific niche, business, or celebrity, especially in real time. With this in mind, could the future on the web be solely dependent on these and other social networking sites?
It was not too long ago that I saw a commercial on television that publicized its product not by its website that we are used to seeing ever since the .com boom in the early 90′s, but by its Facebook page URL. Even though this is a great way for Facebook users to engage and interact with the specific product, along with getting updates in real time in their news feed, but companies may have to realize that there are people out there who are not involved with Facebook and may be against the social side of the internet all together. This premise may even start to drive people away from their product/business.

This also may bring a whole different take on SEO, because internet users may start to see Facebook users optimizing their profile page along with their other social sites more for SERPs than their own business’ website. For tips on how to give your Facebook page an SEO advantage, please view my article on How To Make Your Facebook Profile More SEO Friendly.
With the above possibilities in mind, will this also change the way that the SERPs are presented? We are already seeing SERPs having more social-related content displayed at first glance prior to actual website content. A scenario could be that SERPs change to focus more on the content of updates and happenings from social networking sites, rather than actual business websites. Even journalists are starting to use social media as a way to publish their content, as discussed in a WebProNews (sister site of mySEOblog) article. These are other ways that can repel non-social networking users away from search and other internet uses.
What are your thoughts on the future of social networking sites and how they will dominate the advertising world? Do you think that they will end up hurting the website side of the internet, along with various SEO principles? Please leave your opinion in our comments section below.

I think they can help websites. It gives you an opportunity to reach people that you might not otherwise reach.

The new trend is actually to combine the two. Custom social networking websites are replacing the traditional website. These are smaller niche sites that provide the traditional benefits of a website to house all the information a company wants and the additional benefit of a social network for better target market interaction.
