Google’s SERPs Have Gone Social
On the search giant Google, the SERPs (Search Engine Ranking Pages) are its most common and focused aspect, because they help you (and your customers) find your business’ website or blog in the most visually appealing and productive way possible. Throughout the years, the Google SERPs have evolved in various different ways (listed here) to help keep your business’ website’s listing appearance current and easier to find.
We currently live in a social world, and recently, Google has developed a way that brings your (and your friends’) social networking happenings and integrates them into its SERPs. Google calls this “Social Search,” and I have provided an elaborate description of what this new SERP feature is below from Google’s Social Web Blog:
“Social Search can help you find pages your friends have created, and it can also help you find links your contacts have shared on Twitter and other sites. If someone you’re connected to has publicly shared a link, we may show that link in your results with a clear annotation.”
An example of using social search within your daily search routine is if you are searching for pizza places in your area, and within the SERPs, some of your friends on Twitter may recommend one pizza place from recently tweeting about it from their account. You may also see other recommendations from friends connected to other Google-related services, such as the image-sharing site Flickr, and the free-blogging website Blogger. To see these recommendations from your friends, you must be logged into your Google account while surfing the SERPs.
I have provided a video below from Google that can show you how social search will work for you:
What is your opinion of this new aspect to the Google SERPs? Is this a great alternative method for people to find your business, or should social networking stay out of the SERPs completely? Be sure to leave your feedback in our comments section below.
